Magnet Gifts

Tomorrow is the last day of preschool for my granddaughter. I've been helping her make these magnets for gifts for the teachers. I took two of her princess drawings and had them reduced and copied onto a heavy card stock. We colored them in and glued them onto another heavy sheet of paper, cut them out, glued magnets onto the backs and stuck stickers on the fronts. This is just a small token of my appreciation for all the teachers. They work hard everyday, loving and caring for all the children. They are amazing!
I'm leaving for a music festival and won't be back till July 1st--see you later!

The Demur Maiden Whose Clothes Tell a Tale About a Long Haired Lady and Her Unicorn

Time for another, collaboration! My granddaughter puts down the paint and I find the characters lurking within. The collaborations are changing as I knew they would. My granddaughter is no longer just throwing, splashing or randomly painting, but painting specific pictures. This one is of a girl--I kept her face and basic form, but found these other characters.
I may have time to post another painting before my husband, granddaughter and I head out to a music festival. If not I'll be back July 1st. Happy Summer, Keep cool!!

Linen Table Cloth

I caught a bug that laid me low. Good to be painting again. I've always liked linen--the feel, the texture and how it hangs. It's a cloth with body. The only thing I don't like about it, is that it wrinkles, but then again wrinkles don't bother me all that much, so I like linen.

Doll on the Floor

She sort of looks like she's seeing a blessed light, or a vision, or she wants to hug the cat. I make all my granddaughter's dolls and stuffed animals talk. If I forget to, my granddaughter reminds me, "Make it talk, Gramma." It's interesting what these toys have to say, I'm even surprised by what comes out. Each thing has its own personality, some very different from my own.

Pinwheel

Once upon a time I was on a kick of making pinwheels. I perfected how to make them from acetate so they could weather the outdoors (for a few seasons). I sold them and gave them as gifts. I made simpler paper ones with my art students, I had pinwheels whirling inside and out. I tried driftwood for the sticks, and chopsticks for the paper ones, I've experimented with all sorts of beads and dowels. Last night I got out my bag of left over pinwheel supplies and made a few paper ones with my granddaughter. Pinwheels are fun!

Yellow Bike

Monday is my favorite day of the week. I 'm definitely not a workaholic, I just like getting back to it. I like that mail can go out. I like the start of a new week. (I don't think of Sunday as being the start of the week.) So here's the front wheel of my husband's yellow bike, and pictures of my art show hanging at Linnaea's in San Luis Obispo till June 29th.

Huge Bug!

I think this is the biggest bug I've ever seen! I opened the umbrella, getting ready to paint and there she was with a little cluster of eggs nearby. Check out the video. Even though it isn't very clear you can see her middle leg on her right side is moving. It looks as though she's perturbed and she's flipping me off--there even seems to be a middle finger of sorts. As I was painting, she laid another egg! Wow, looked like another leg was extending out of her rear with pinchers and it dropped off the egg which almost dropped off the umbrella, but some sticky stuff kept it hanging on. What kind of bug is this? Don't tell me it's a cockroach--it looks like one, but I don't think it is. Well, I'm amazed even if it is one!

Charcoal Figure Study IV

After I started this one of my granddaughter, I left the room and came back to her drawing on the portrait! When she saw me she dropped the charcoal pencil and hid under a blanket on the couch. Her reaction was interesting, because she had never done this before, it's like she instinctively knew it wasn't OK . I was surprised, but wasn't too upset because it was at the beginning of the portrait. I decided to keep her lines in. I like them. She said she was helping, by drawing in the bench she was standing on.
It's tough to take a picture of a black and white drawing without that blueish color of the white paper--The best lighting I've found is outside, just before the sun rises in the morning. I took this just after the sun set, but no, that light is not the same. I hang my show today. Yesterday, besides drawing this portrait, I framed five figure studies. I've really left things up to the last minute. Time, time is the thing...
Also--check it out, I made her feet just a bit bigger than they should be--she looks a little like a hobbit!
