Plaster Sculpture II

Back when I taught art, we made small sculptures. I mixed up a slew of plaster and perlite and filled paper cups. The kids were given an old butter knife and a large nail. This is a the sculpture I made at home, experimenting before I solidified the lesson. I used a sharper, pointier knife for this one. The preparation that went into that lesson was a bit much considering having to make a plaster form for students K through 6 in two or three schools--hundreds of plaster forms! I remember having to make them in my garage on a winter stormy day with winds blowing strong. It was cold, wet and plaster was slow to set--it was a miserable day of prep--I remember it well! The lesson itself was a good one. I was given the idea from another art teacher. The children loved grinding away on their sculptures and drilling holes. The following week we painted them with watercolors--painting on plaster is great--the color is so bright and vibrant. I had to have extra plaster cups for the children who ground their first one down to dust.

Succulent II

It would just figure when I hardly have any time to paint, now that preschool is out, that I would choose to paint such a complicated subject. I've been working on this off and on. It's frustrating not to complete a painting in one sitting. I want to keep going and if I can't, which is the case lately, it's harder to get back to it. It didn't look like I would have the time to finish this today, but miracles do happen. To all you faithful viewers, please bear with me! I don't know the name of this plant, but it does flower and I love that braided or overlapping spine. This one must have been cut back or knocked off when young, so it's growing two spines.

Water Main

A patriotic water main at a nearby motel. I watched the fireworks right behind this motel overlooking the bay. This is just a portion of a larger assembly of pipes and such.

I met a talented artist, Raymond Logan, who also creates small daily paintings. I purchased this beautiful painting from him. His wife packaged it up so nicely with a cardboard frame/folder. I'm going to hang it that way, with the cardboard frame! Thank you Raymond it was nice to meet you and your family!
Also, please check out a web site called: Crochet Along. They have used my crochet hook painting, created into a banner by Jaime Birren, for their web site! Thank you for that, and many crochet stitches to all the members!
