Sitting out in the summer sun after the dance recital.
School's out--we've got a few things planned--some art classes, a week of acting class, and in between, lots of swimming in a local pool. We are, once again, getting ready for the children's crafts fair which will be held at a local library on August 4th.
This blog started with small daily paintings then changed to a more personal sharing of projects, events and photos. Enjoy!

Cauliflower
I may have picked this too soon, but I already let two other heads go bad, from not picking them on time--I kept the protective leaves on this head until we cook it tonight. It sure is a massive plant just for this small head of cauliflower! All the outer leaves filled my compost to the top!

My Mother's Profile
I remember, as kids, we'd go to the fair where a silhouette artist would cut out people's profiles all day long. They didn't use the trick of projecting their shadow to make it easier, no, they maneuvered the thick black paper all around, twisted the scissors in and out then presto--a perfect silhouette!--no drawing--no cheating--they pulled it right out of thin air! I could have sat and watched that all day! (I also loved to watch the close up of Captain Kangaroo's hands when he was cutting paper for his show's daily art project!) These were things that could put me in a trance....................I found this little silhouette of my mom that I had cut way back when I was still in high school or soon after. I had used a very ugly yellow construction paper--probably didn't have any black paper on hand, so I photo shopped it to be a bit darker--my mom must have been in her early 50's. It turned out to be a pretty good likeness!

Then and Now
I found a few self portraits I had drawn back when I was much younger--this one, I might have been 18--it's done quickly with a much freer style than I have now. Because I've been thinking about aging--time passing--growing older, I thought I'd strike the same or similar pose now at the age of 57. Sort of a before and after--and what about all those years in between? I guess that's the allure of a comparison like this---there's the mystery of the time that has passed and the mystery of aging.
